SPARKS WILL FLY
A Narrative Song Cycle

(I)
And so
He’s left alone
No one to fill
Another empty lonely day

‘Cuz love
Is like a ghost
You hit the light
And see it quickly fade away

But all he knows
About life’s secret mysteries
He’s got his books
And an engineer’s degree

So he
Draws up a plan
He gathers tools
And tells his folks, “Don’t mind the noise”
(As if they had a choice)

And with
The deepest breath
He sets to work
On something more than just a toy

He starts on the body
He starts on the body
He starts on the body

(II)
He’s got a brand new
Fun invention
He had a problem but he knew just what to do

He’ll give her red hair
Or black or brown hair
It doesn’t matter when she’s too good to be true

[Inst.]

Her limbs are limber
Her power’s solar
She’s more than human, more what humans want to be

She don’t need oil
She’s ABSO
Just buff her chrome and gauge her electricity

But what about the neighbors
What about his family
What about society
What’llwedowhatl’llwedowhat’llwedo

We’ll throw a Barbeque!

He’s got a brand new
Love invention
He had a problem and he knew just what to do

So look upon her
And rev your engines
And if you're lucky he will build one just for you

(III)
And when all their friends have gone home
The two of them stand alone
Two strangers one reality
A blissful singularity
She looks at him for who he is
He leans in for a kiss
And they cry

Oooooo

Twelve years go by like a dream
The now married man and machine
A pretty house with metal kids
In their pretty metal digs
Never dreamed it’d be like this
In this actuated bliss
She gets hers and he gets his
And that’s fine.

[Inst.]

(IV)
She
Looks at his face
She sees his bones
And how his skin has gone to gray
(She hasn’t aged a day)

And love
Is like a ghost
You hit the lights
And see it slowly fades away

Eventually
She sees the think that toasts their bread
She really sees
She cannot shake it from her head

Look at that body
Look at that body
I think it’s time for me to go
We had a good run
We had a good burn in
Oh but look at that body
Look at that toaster's body
What'llwedowhat'llwedowhat'llwedo

(V)
And if he is being honest
It was too good
To not fall off
And if he is being honest
He never
Trusted Asimov

Someday she’d be gone

So I’m Taking all the kids in the car
We’ll take a ride
Gonna take ‘em to the public pool
And we’ll all jump inside

You’ll see sparks will fly
You’ll see sparks will fly
All our dreams will fry

[Instrumental]

You’ll see sparks will fly

(VI)
He stands at water’s edge
His toes curled round the edge
His kids in hand, to take a swim
To undo all she did to him
And then he sees the little thing
Doling out the chlorine
So demur, so pristine
So sincere and serene
Like a cry from his dreams
Could he ever let himself love another machine?

Just look at that body
